International Career Day

Event organiser

University of Helsinki

On the agenda

The International Career Day is an event organized by other international students so you don't make the same mistakes we did when we came to Finland and started working here. There will be no CV clinics nor any hiring companies at the event. Instead, you will get to know all the practicalities of the Finnish working life which are obvious to Finns but maybe not so obvious when coming from abroad.

What is an unemployment fund? And a tax card? How do I get one? What is the role of a trade union? Where can I look for jobs? Where can I go for career advice? These are some of the questions that will be answered at the event.

Date and time: Fri  30. Oct at 10:00 - 15:00
Venue: Kumpula Campus, Physicum, Gustaf Hällströmin katu 2

Programme

10:00 - 12:00 / Main Talks

This first block of talks will contain the most important information you don't want to miss. We will have 4 experts explain everything you need to know about working in Finland (okay, maybe not everything but at least the most important stuff).

The speakers are:

  • International House Helsinki - Bureaucracy for working in Finland.
  • Tieteentekijät - Trade unions, worker rights and unemployment funds.
  • Helsinki Employment Services - Tips for your job search as an international and registering as a job seeker.
  • Career Services - Summer job applications and traineeship subsidy.

12:00 - 13:30 / Lunch break and trade union fair
After the main block of talks, we will give you some time to have lunch, meet your union and rest your mind, because we know showing up on a Friday in the middle of the lovely Finnish autumn is not easy. It can also be the time for networking (or making friends, whatever you are into).

At the trade union fair, you will be able to meet a representative of a trade union of your field, hear about their services and, if you want to, join it.

13:30 - 14:30 / Parallel sessions

To end the day, we will have 3 separate parallel sessions on entrepreneurship, building your network in Finland and your strengths as an international job seeker. You can only attend one of them. But no worries, we will share the materials of all sessions with everyone.

  • Panel discussion on entrepreneurship (Business Helsinki x Helsinki Think Company x Helsinki Incubators)
Have you ever considered entrepreneurship as a career path? Our panelists will give us an introduction to starting a business, the support and services available and some dos and don’ts from their experiences as foreign entrepreneurs.
It doesn’t matter if you have an idea in mind or are just curious about a different career path, come and learn how to get started.

  • Making networking meaningful & sustainable (Career Services)
This workshop takes a different look at networking. What if it isn't about the exhausting practice of ramping up your LinkedIn contact number for the sake of status or tugging at recruiters' sleeves at career fairs? We'll discuss how to think about networking in a meaningful and socially sustainable way as part of your career and consider some cultural factors relevant in the Finnish context.

  • How not being Finnish can be your biggest strength! (Una Europa)
As an international person in Finland, you probably have tons of experiences that Finnish applicants might not have. How do you make these your competitive advantage?
Join this workshop, hosted by internationals, to discuss, explore, and test how your unique experiences might be just what can help you make an impression in your job search!

Registration

Registration is now open!

We ask for registration to keep track of the amount of participants and ensure everyone gets a spot. If you don't manage to register to the event in time, you can still come to Kumpula Campus on the day of the event. Some people will probably not show up and we will offer those places to anyone who wants to attend.

We will try to make the materials from the event public to everyone. Still, if you know you will not be able to attend but would like to receive the materials, please contact Raúl Momblona ([email protected]).
